In 1611, Spanish explorer Sebastián Vizcaíno arrived here in search of the "Islands of Gold and Silver." He named Ofunato Bay "San Andrés" and described it as a "Great Inlet." Since ancient times, this natural harbor has bustled with ships. The landscape evokes the Age of Discovery when world explorers sought "Zipangu, the Land of Gold," and reflects the deep-rooted connection between the gold of Michinoku and the local culture living in harmony with the mountains and sea.
