The Keicho Embassy was a diplomatic mission deployed by feudal lord of the Sendai Domain, Date Masamune, some 400 years ago. This mission was approved by the King of Spain and the Pope, under the condition that Christian missionary work be allowed to enter the domain. In exchange, Lord Date requested direct trade with New Spain (notably present-day Mexico). The Sant Juan Bautista Museum and Park explore this history along with the traces left behind from this mission.
Masamune selected his retainer, Hasekura Tsunenaga, for the mission. Hasekura set sail across the Pacific Ocean on the Sant Juan Bautista, a Western style sailing ship built within the Sendai Domain. He traveled through Mexico and eventually arrived in Spain, where he was recieved by King Felipe III. He then sailed to Rome to visit Pope Paul V in what was globally recognized as a remarkable feat.
The building is currently closed for renovations, but visitors are free to explore the park outside.
