In 1613, Hasekura Tsunenaga and his crew of 180 people boarded the Sant Juan Bautista under the orders of Date Masamune, ruler of the Sendai Domain. They set sail from a small bay located on the west coast of the Oshika Peninsula and embarked on their journey to Rome. Hasekura Tsunenaga’s statue stands on the observation deck overlooking the entrance to the bay. The well called “Nanban Ido,” along with the commemorative site marker related to Sebastián Vizcaíno are all located near the coast.
